Constipation, bloating, diarrhea, heartburn and gas are digestive problems that are pretty normal for the most part, most times these problems resolve themselves before long.

However if you’ve been experiencing digestive problems more often than usual and they seem to last longer than before, you might need to make some lifestyle changes. Here are some tips to help improve your gut health and make digestion easier

  1. Eat a Balanced Diet: Whole foods, fibres, healthy fat, fruits and water might just be lacking in most of your meals. Most people mainly eat processed foods because of they are cheaper and more accessible, but health experts believe that the less processed food a person takes the better their gut health will be. Eating a balanced diet has many benefits for the human body and easy passage of stool is one of them. Oats, seeds, nuts, avocados, and vegetables are some good sources of fibre. Foods like salmon, walnuts, sardines and plant-based oils are rich in omega-3 acids can also help improve digestion, while probiotic yogurt and sourdough bread will also help support your digestive system.
  2. Exercise: Having an active lifestyle not only affects how you look but also how your body functions. A walk after a meal can help improve digestion, breathing exercises and yoga are also helpful in stimulating your abdominal muscles allowing for easy passage of stool or gas. Exercising at least 15 minutes a day can change a lot more in your body than you’d think.
  3. Know your body: Some foods and drinks are not compatible with certain people, if you’ve noticed that when you eat a particular food you get bloated easily it is best to avoid those foods. Processed foods, alcohol, caffeine, and fried food have been found to be largely responsible for digestive problems in a lot of people, so reducing your intake of these foods would have a great impact on your digestion.
